STATEMENT
When I was thinking about who I would choose for my Femme Champion, the women who live in the many war torn countries came to my mind. These women endure the most horrific conditions in order to get even meager supplies of food and water for their families. They brave rape, beatings and bullets on a daily basis but somehow they manage to hold up their heads and keep going. These women are truly my Femme Champions. I have portrayed three women who symbolize the places in the world that are always in the news these days, Africa, Afghanistan, the Middle East, Central and South America. The women are woven into a quilted background as the stiches that hold their families, communities and countries together. Each patch has the name of a country from the areas the women come from. I chose a bright pallet for the hope that all the women carry with them. The medium is acrylic on paper.
Women of War
Femme Champions are women who excel in what they do and set an example for others to follow. In choosing the unrecognized and overlooked women of war, I felt they not only excel at what they do but are the backbone that hold their families, communities and countries together under the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances. I want to honor these brave women. They all are true Femme Champions.
