Artist Statement: The mirror on my painting has a dual purpose. First, it insists that we look at ourselves. We must face the inner prejudices and biases that divide us and look toward a future where we can all dwell in peace and equity and LOVE.Secondly, the mirror connotes limits and bars of restriction. Its vertical lines are symbolic of jail bars. It is clear that many people, most notably those of colour, are routinely, wrongfully, and disproportionally incarcerated due to blatant discrimination, bias, hatred, and ignorance.Relegating a fellow human being to the discriminatory realm of "otherness" is a cruel method of dehumanization, that erects iron clad barriers against liberty and the inalienable right for full human expression and respect.
